As the seat of Denton County, the city of Denton TX is a large community with a 2020 Census-counted population of 139,869. This puts the city in the top 30 largest cities in Texas and the 12th largest in the greater Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, and it lies at the extreme north of the DFW area right on Interstate Highway 35. The town was founded in the early 1800s and named after a captain of the Texas militia named John B Denton. First the railroad line arrived in Denton in the late 1800s, leading to major growth. Next, two higher learning institutions moved into the town around the turn of the century: the University of North Texas first and then Texas Woman’s University, and they made Denton stand out from other developing communities in the area.
Today, Denton honors this early Texas pioneer history with annual community events, museums and historical areas like the Denton County Courthouse on the Square Museum and the Historical Park. The town also hosts the the North Texas State Fair and Rodeo, which is a great event for families to see rodeo events, ride amusement rides, and enjoy local food. The Denton Arts and Jazz Festival is another great annual event, and the Thin Line Fest is an annual free film and music festival.
